The short version

We collect your email address and city so we can send you newsletter summaries. Our summaries are written with the help of AI from public meeting records, then proofread by a human. We don't sell your data, and you can unsubscribe anytime with one click.

What we collect

When you subscribe to the newsletter:

  • Email address — required to send you newsletters.
  • City selection — so we know which summaries to send you.
  • Subscription date — recorded when you sign up.

When you use our contact form, we collect the name, email address, and message you provide so we can reply to you. We do not request a phone number, mailing address, or any other personal information.

How we use it

Your email is used solely to send you city council newsletter summaries for the city you selected. We will never use it to send unrelated content, advertisements (beyond local sponsors included in the newsletter itself), or promotional emails.

How we use AI

We use AI to help draft our newsletter summaries. Here's exactly how it works:

  • Only public records go through AI. We feed publicly available city council meeting minutes, agendas, and meeting video transcripts to Anthropic's Claude to produce a draft summary. Subscriber data is never sent to any AI service.
  • Video transcription is self-hosted. When meeting video is available, we transcribe it on our own private infrastructure rather than sending it to a third-party transcription service.
  • A human reviews every summary before it sends. Either Nolan or a trusted reviewer proofreads names, checks facts against the source material, and edits the draft before any newsletter goes out.
  • Mistakes can still happen. AI can misread or paraphrase in misleading ways, and even careful proofreading can miss things. If you spot an error, please email us and we'll correct it. For anything official — votes, ordinances, legal notices — always rely on your city's official records, not our summary.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers to operate the site and newsletter:

  • Resend — delivers our newsletter emails and provides delivery, open, and click analytics for each broadcast. Your email address is shared with Resend so it can send you the newsletter.
  • PostHog — anonymous product analytics for our website (page views, signup funnel performance). We do not send your email address or other subscriber data to PostHog.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with any other third parties.

Unsubscribing

Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link in the footer. Clicking it immediately marks your subscription as inactive — you will not receive any further emails. No confirmation required, no forms to fill out.

Data retention

We retain your email address in our database as long as your subscription is active. If you unsubscribe, your record is marked inactive. You may request complete deletion of your data by emailing us directly.

Cookies & analytics

We use PostHog for basic product analytics on the website — things like which pages get visited and how the signup flow performs. PostHog may set cookies to do this. We do not use these analytics for advertising and we do not share them with ad networks.

Our newsletters are sent through Resend, which records standard email metrics (deliveries, opens, and link clicks) for each broadcast.
